Natural Ways to Maintain and Clean Your Fridge

<< Go back
A refrigerator is one of the most important appliances in your home Ė it keeps your groceries fresh, your meals from spoiling, and your drinks cool. Thatís why keeping it clean and sanitised is so important. Besides, a fridge is among the most power-intensive electrical appliances, so youíll want it to run smoothly without surprising effects on your electricity bills. In order to work properly, a fridge should be regularly maintained and cleaned and the best way to do it is by using natural products.

White vinegar for weekly scrubs
Every one or two weeks, you should give your fridge a nice scrub down to make sure your food is kept in clean conditions. You can make a homemade cleaning product by just using two simple ingredients. Mix two cups of hot water with one cup of white vinegar in a bucket or spray bottle. Clean your fridge with a microfiber cloth or high-quality sponge but donít forget to turn it off and remove all food before you start. Vinegar acts like a deodorizer, cuts through grease, and has excellent sanitising properties, but if youíre not much of a fan of its smell Ė add a few drops of your favourite essential oil to the cleaning mixture.

Baking soda for stubborn stainsBaking Soda
If you had a spill in your fridge and didnít clean it right away, then water-vinegar mixture wonít help you much. In that case, you can rely on another excellent natural cleaner Ė baking soda. Mix a small amount of it with just a little bit of water to get a thick paste. Apply the paste over the stains and leave it for one hour to work. The paste should loosen the stain so you can simply wipe it with a wet cloth. If the stains are on some of the removable parts, such as shelves and drawers, you can clean them the same way but outside the fridge. Soak them, leave them for a while and then simply rinse. Theyíll be as good as new!

Find the optimal temperature
Usually, the simplest way to maintain your fridge is to use it properly so make sure you get the right temperature. Too low temperature can cause your fridge to become noisy and require more frequent defrosting while if itís too warm the food will spoil quickly and bad odours may spread. Make sure you check temperature setting Ė thatís the easiest way to solve this problem. On the other hand, if your fridge temperature keeps getting out of control, itís usually a sign that something is wrong. If this happens you have two choices: replace or repair? Call the professionals and find out what the source of trouble is.

Interior of fridgeNeutralise the odours
Donít keep food in the fridge for too long Ė inspect it regularly and throw away anything that is past its due date. Also, make sure you clean up spills as soon as they occur since they can drip onto other food and cause bad odours in your fridge. To neutralise these smells, you can keep a plastic container filled with baking soda at the bottom of your fridge. It absorbs smells and itís completely safe near your food. The same goes for freshly ground coffee and if you want to give your fridge a nice aroma Ė try soaking a piece of cotton wool in vanilla or whatever you like and leave it inside the fridge for 12 hours.

Itís completely understandable if you don't want harmful chemicals anywhere near your food. The good news is that you donít even need them to clean your fridge. Feel free to rely on these all-natural cleaners Ė your fridge will be as good as new and your food fresher for longer.
